The next was from Spencer in Minnesota:
I thought you said he was uploading in Georgia.
And finally from Scotty in Maine:
Dude, something’s fucked up here.
He shut off his phone and scrolled faster for the code, searching for the line that Hayley had mentioned. Two minutes left. He was running out of time. The sound of the doors opening swooshed from the other side of room, but he couldn’t afford to lose focus. He had to find that code, had to know if his deepest fears were going to be realized. Had to…
“Find it?” Natalie asked, coming up beside him.
“Why aren’t you watching the geeks?” Kyle growled, not taking his eyes off the screen.
“Oh, don’t worry about them. I locked them in a supply closet down the hall. They’ll be in there for a while.” She bent closer, the spicy, citrus scent of her perfume doing little to calm his nerves. “What’s wrong?”
“The guys messaged me. There are problems at the other server stations.”
“Problems?”
“Yeah. I haven’t had a chance to call them back yet.”
“I’ll handle it.” Natalie picked up his phone and hit redial for Scotty. “Hey. It’s Nat. We’re at the server in Savannah. What’s up?”
Her gasp didn’t help Kyle’s situation.
“Right. Okay. We’ll be in contact later.”
She hung up and tossed Kyle’s phone back on the desk. “Arrieta uploaded the virus.”
“Fuck. Where? When? I thought for sure he would’ve used this one.”
“All of them.”
“What?” Kyle looked up at her then. “How?”
“Not sure.” Natalie crossed her arms. “But if you move, I’ll see if I can capture a copy for our analysts in Arlington.”
Deep in thought, he allowed her to take his seat. “When would Arrieta have time to do that? We’ve been watching these servers for weeks.”
“Hard to tell.” She typed in a command, then sat back as the files she selected duplicated. “Given the nature of the upload, I’d say he probably had the techs slip it in without them even knowing.”
“Arrieta could do that?”
“Yep. Amazing what the most skilled hackers can do.” She rummaged around in Todd’s drawers and pulled out a small thumb drive, which she clicked into place in one of the computer’s USB ports. “Now let me just make another, portable copy for us and we’ll be all set.”
Moments later, she removed the small drive and shoved it in her pocket then shut the system down completely. “All right. Let’s go. Can you give me a boost back up?”
Kyle did, then climbed back into the ventilation system himself.
This night wasn’t going to plan. Not at all.
